What the hell was THAT?

snaporium
I am about to sound completely insane - but I may have seen a ghost last night. This is something I totally don't believe in.. well.. not 100%.

I went to bed last night as normal. About 2am or so, I woke up to a light bothering my eyes. All of the lights were out in the house, however, it seems the porch light was on. All I could think was, 'Why is the porch light on?'

I opened my eyes a little wider and saw a tall, thin man with blond hair (straight and parted down the middle,) wearing a blue shirt..  open the front door and enter. I immediately felt threatened or "spooked" (I really hate using that word..)

I jumped up and ran into my parent's room screaming - "Mom, Dad.. HELP! There's a man trying to get in the house."

I suddenly felt completely chilled to the bone, my heart racing, the hair on my arms standing straight up - petrified with fear! My mom and dad race out of the bedroom, my husband popped awake.. and NOTHING. No one was there. The porch light was off. I was completely confused.

I was still so freaked, there was nothing I could say. I just sat there, trying to process what I had just witnessed. My husband stomped off, annoyed I woke him up, while my mom went and grabbed some sage and began to burn and smudge the house with it. (Yes, she is superstitious.) I just sat there - cell phone in one hand and rosary in the other.

I said a few prayers and just tried to lower my heart rate. I was completely weirded out.

That, my friends, was the scariest thing I have experienced in a long time. I am not sure if it was my imagination or if my mind was in between a REM cycle and an awake state - or.. if it was an apparition/ghost.

*sigh*

Weird.

I Ain't Afraid of No Ghost

I live in a house with people who are obsessed with the paranormal. Well, maybe obsessed is a strong word to use, but let's just say they talk about it - A LOT.

Of course they swear this land they are living on is haunted. It used to be an old battlefield during the civil war. They report strange, dry mist floating and hovering; sheets slowly being pulled off of them in the night; electrical items coming on and going off - you know, weird stuff.

Even my niece when she was about 2 or 3 used to play with a "Mr. Mopey." She described him as a man dressed in black and from what I can gather, his attire was a bit old fashioned. Or the little girl/boy she used to throw a ball to.

I chalk it up to an imaginary friend. THEY think of the paranormal.

Another thing they do is watch paranormal shows - ALL THE TIME. If my mom is not watching a cooking show, it's definitely a Ghost Hunters or Dead Files or something like that.

Last night, I came in close to midnight and mom was in the living room watching the goofy ghost hunter show. You know the one? The guy is super dramatic and has that faux hawk on his head. I started giggling through most of it.Then she moves on to Dead Files. I am dozing off, and of course my brain is processing what I am hearing.

I go to bed last night and have some troubling dreams. Weird ones about dead people, and murder, and what not.

Thanks family. That's all I needed.

Do you TOUR?

"The whole object of travel is not to set foot on foreign land; it is at last to set foot on one's own country as a foreign land." ~G.K. Chesterton

When you travel, do you take guided tours of a city? I rarely do, and the reason why is I may not be interested in the subject.

However, there have been three tours I would recommend over and over - 1. The Dolphin Magic Tour in Savannah 2. The Harbour Cruise in NYC and my favorite of all 3. The Vampire Tour in New Orleans.

If you happen to be heading down to the Gulf - I highly recommend the Haunted History Tours.

They have so many options, especially if vampires aren't your thing.

There is:
New Orleans Ghost Tours
Garden District Tours
New Orleans Voodoo Tours
New Orleans Vampire Tours
New Orleans Cemetary Tours

Each are equally spectacular.

Now back to the Vampire Tour - I have taken this 3 times. Seriously. You maybe wondering - "What in the world, there are no such thing as vampires.."

Sure..

In the traditional sense.

New Orleans has a history of bizarre occurances. Here is the description of the tour:

Our famous New Orleans Vampire Tour allows you to enter the dark and mysterious world of the undead. Walk through New Orleans' history and experience the legends of famous New Orleans vampires, real and fictional. Visit sights and locations associated with these creatures of the night, including a visit to a noted Vampire tavern. Are there vampires lurking in the French Quarter? Escape into the night as our offbeat, theatrical New Orleans tour guides provide you with an eerie, chilling yet fun-filled adventure!

Here are some frequently asked questions about their tours:

What is the cost? The tour is $20. for adults, $17. for students & seniors, and $10. for kids 12 & under. (Five years & under are free)
How long is the tour? All of the tours are about 2 hours long.

Is there a lot of walking? No. It’s a leisurely stroll. We’re talking blocks, not miles. Definitely not a hike.

How many houses does the tour go into?
Many of the sites on the tour are people’s private homes. The tour groups don’t go into private residences. But, that (in no way) diminishes the enjoyment or popularity of the tour. We do go into a couple of haunted bars on the ghost and vampire tours.

What happens if it rains? The tours are done rain or shine. If people show up in the rain, the guide will be there to take them on a tour.

Can we pay the balance with a credit card?
Yes. Haunted History Tours takes cash, travellers checks, company checks and all credit cards.

Is the tour appropriate for kids?
The tour is TOTALLY appropriate for kids! In fact, Haunted History Tours are probably the ONLY activity that’s appropriate for kids to do in the French Quarter!

Where is the meeting place?
That depends on which tour you’re going on.
The Ghost, Cemetery, and Voodoo Tours all meet and depart from Rev. Zombie’s Voodoo Shop, at 723 St. Peter Street. That’s in the middle of the block on St. Peter, between Bourbon & Royal Streets, right across from Pat O’Brien’s Bar.
The Vampire Tour meets in front of the St. Louis Cathedral, at the gates of Jackson Square. (Chartres Street side).

The Garden District Tours meet in front of the Lafayette Cemetery, 1400 Washington Avenue, off of St. Charles Avenue.

Can I walk to the Garden District from the French Quarter ?
No. But it’s only minutes away by taxi cab. Or, you can take the St. Charles Streetcar. However, the streetcar will take some time, as you’ll have to wait for one and then it stops every couple of blocks to let people on & off. We recommend that you take a cab to the Garden District to insure that you get there on time and then take the streetcar back if you’d like.

If you DO take the streetcar to the tour, make sure that you get off at the right stop (Josephine Street). The streetcar will not stop automatically. You have to let the driver know that you want to get off.

What makes this company better than the other Ghost, Vampire, Cemetery, or Garden District Tours?

Well, Haunted History is the company that you’ve seen on A&E, History Channel, Bravo, Travel Channel.

n fact, the Travel Channel actually recommends the Haunted History Tour as The #1 Tour in the city…
A Must Do!

Haunted History is the company that literally WROTE THE BOOK on this stuff. They wrote the book, produced the video… EVERY OTHER tour company is just a copycat of what they originated.

Haunted History is the company that did all the research on the hauntings… Trust me… THIS is the company to go with!

What’s the difference between the Ghost & the Vampire tours? Will I be seeing the same stuff? Is there any overlap of material?

The Ghost and Vampire tours are completely different.
(As are all of the tours that the company offers).

The Ghost tour takes you to French Quarter sites connected to actual documented hauntings.

The Vampire tour is a combination of fiction & reality. Fiction in the sense of Anne Rice, Bram Stoker, movie sites from Interview With the Vampire (filmed here)…

Reality, in that the tour takes you to sites in the French Quarter associated with actual Vampire type crimes… Murders, taken from police records, city archives, interviews, etc.

Do people jump out at you ?
Absolutely not. This is not a Halloween spook house. These are tours based on real events in the city’s history. Our city’s actual history is stranger than anything fictional.

Will we actually “experience” anything paranormal on the tour ?
Some people do, some don’t. But definitely bring your camera. People often capture “things” in their photos that weren’t there when the picture was taken.

Do we go to a cemetery on the Ghost tour and do you have any nighttime cemetery tours ?

The Ghost tour does not visit a cemetery. The Ghost tour stays within the French Quarter and focuses on actual documented hauntings.

The Cemetery tour is a daytime tour. The cemetery gates are locked at 3:pm Monday – Saturday and at Noon on Sunday.

The Cemetery tour is NOT a spooky tour. It’s more of an “academic” tour on our oldest burial ground, St. Louis Cemetery #1. The tour explores the burial procedures, who’s buried there…

You’ll visit the tomb of Marie Laveau, the Voodoo Queen and learn a little about the history of Voodoo in New Orleans. But primarily, it’s just a great tour of our oldest cemetery.

How cool is that?

And the boy said, "I see dead people."

"When people believed the world was flat, the idea of a round world scared them silly. They then found out how the round world works. It's the same with the world of the supernatural. Until we know how it works, we will continue to carry around this unnecessary burden of fear."
 ~Dr. John Markway

It is not an easy thing to admit there just might be "something else" out there - among the living, yet not of this world.

Some say it is a figment of the imagination, while others may point out the "evil" that is lurking. Some see the paranormal  as very helpful, and just a normal part of the life circle. While others will "poo poo" the idea.

I spoke with several people who were willing to share their experiences. I thought I would give you a quick account of our conversation.

Let me explain why I am covering this topic - besides the fact I find it completely fascinating - I just don't think anyone has all the answers. This is one subject that I am completely not sure about.

To give you some background, I grew up with a family that was very superstitious and definitely believed in the supernatural. I, on the other hand, was the skeptic.

I decided to talk to my mom about her beliefs and experiences with "ghosts" and paranormal phenomenon . Here is what she had to say:

Nicole: Okay mom, how old is our home?
Mae: Our home is nine years old, but the property we live on was once a battle ground during the Civil War. We live in the Oconee National Forest, which was once known as the little township of Blountsville.

Nicole: Has anyone ever died on the property?
Mae: I am not sure, just many pets! There are many random stone placements on property and one area that is a perfect rectangle and blooms with daffodils in the spring. It also has random rose bushes also near the spot.

Nicole: What type of activity have "other" people reported to you? That basically confirms your own experiences. Plus what have you personally experienced?
Mae: The biggest thing is we see a mist. It's not a normal fog - but a moving mist of sorts. We also see shadows that don't make any sense. The door bell rings with no one there, and btw - it does not work. The stereo comes on by itself. We and others have had the covers pulled off of us while sleeping. There are quick movements from the corner of our eye.

People have seen the image of a man on our drive and at our front door. Things being moved-t hings being lost and then found placed in other places.

Your niece, Autum, use to  stare at one part of room then taking a ball and placing it there and walking away, later same ball was found in another location a few days later with no one moving it.  A mist showing up beside Autumn in a photo.  We have seen a strange face in another photo.  Heard knocking.  Autumn has announced a Mr. Mopey or other strange names for an imaginary  friend or was it an imaginary friend?

The feeling of someone touching my arm-the feeling of someone curled up in bed next to me. I have heard scratchings at the doors.  I have seen doors opening for no reason and then shutting again.  Then finding  strange pieces of jewelry appearing (a necklace and a ring).

I have seen water turning on in sink without anyone doing it-.  Once when your cousin from Indiana was visiting,we were watching tv and talking and talking with Autumn when your dad comes in and said: Did you know Autumn was outside? We told him she had been with us the entire time. He saw her and we did too at the same time. Autumn now describes a little girl she plays with that is wearing a black dress with buttons, she has blond hair and orange eyes!

Nicole: I actually remember one night (and this has only happened once) - Mina (my Kurdish exchange student) and I were sleeping in the guest room, and the door kept opening and closing... opening and closing.. and it made this creaky sound. I thought it had to be the cat. But we woke up - it was still doing it - and there was no cat. Then it suddenly stopped.

Okay.. next question: Does any of this frighten you?
Mae: No, I figure whatever it is - it's lonely and wants attention.

Nicole: That's weird, Mom. Okay.. now.. How often does this happen, and under what circumstances?
Mae: Late October and early November or when the property has been disturbed or property nearby disturbed.

Nicole: Have you ever had the house blessed? Does this affect what you believe religiously?
Mae: Not blessed by a priest, but I have used a smudge stick (sage). (I think it is time again.) Yes, it does affect what I believe. There are definitely spirits among us.

That was a conversation with my mother.

Then I had a conversation with an old friend from High School named Travis. Now Travis is not religious and is probably one of the most level-headed people I have ever met. Here is our conversation:

Nicole: How old is your home?
Travis: It is a little over 90 years old, was built by my grandpa.

Nicole: Has anyone ever died on the property?
Travis: Several have died in the house over the years and my great g'pa shot a man on the porch.

Nicole: Lord have mercy. Okay.. What type of activity have people reported to you?
Travis: Someone walking down the hall at night, doors being opened while everyone is asleep, chairs being moved in the night, cold chills in the yard sometimes.

Nicole: What have you experienced?
Travis: Pretty much all the same with a little extra. Something touched me while i was in bed one night. The bed moved as if someone bumped against it and then i felt something kind of pass through my leg. I was freaked at first but just changed sides of the bed now lol. It felt like someone was backing up to the bed to lay down to be honest. Maybe my g'pa.

Nicole: Have you ever had a paranormal team or psychic investigate the house?
Travis: I never tried that, and since i don't notice much of anything anymore, dunno that it would even be worth trying.

Nicole: Does any of this frighten you?
Travis: There were times that i got scared out in the yard and ran into the house, but its been a long time since that happened.

Nicole: hahahhaa.. Okay.. How often, or under what certain circumstances, does the activity happen?

Travis: Usually between one and three in the morning are when the stuff in the house was noticed. People have left in the middle of the night and said they wouldnt sleep here again lol

Nicole: Has the house been blessed?
Travis: I have never had the house blessed, and have no info on whether it ever has been.

Nicole: Are you religious? Does this affect what you believe?
Travis: No i am not religious. I have read scripture from several different religions but do not vow to any of them.

Nicole: Soo.. anything else I should know?
Travis: I never believed in ghosts until i started living here by myself. They are real, whether its good or bad, but i think spirits roam after they have left their body for a while.

There you have it - two different accounts of two completely different experiences. What about you? What have you experienced in your home, or someone else's home? What are your beliefs about the supernatural?

I have a few stories, but I am going to share my personal story at the end of my paranormal series.

Please share in the comment section your experience or even your beliefs about ghosts and the supernatural/paranormal!
