Memorial Day morning, my friend from home, Telisa, and I took off for Cullman, AL to see the Ave Maria Grotto.
Next stop - St. Benard's Abbey (Benedictine Monastery)
Cullman, AL was also destroyed in many areas from the tornado...
and then there is the sign that you are truly in the south...
Next we drove to Hanceville to see the Castillo de San Miguel
Followed by the Shine of the Most Blessed Sacrement. Are you familiar with EWTN? Okay.. now - THIS is where Mother Angelica lived.
I went to the Abbey's Candle shop and met the monk that makes the candles. I bought this one - it smells of peppermint and eucalyptus.
I bought this at Smith Farms

Oh, what beautiful, inspirational photos! After 13 years in Catholic schools, I feel right at home at the grotto even if I do have my issues with the Church. I love places like that ... :) And I love the products that the monks and nuns make! I used to get a catlogue where you could order everything from fruitcakes to medals to greeting cards to coffees that had all been made by religious -- beautiful products made with love and devotion, and supporting people with such a noble mission in life ....
Looks like someone is having an outstanding staycation!!
Your staycation looks fantastic! I am so jealous!
Eeehh. That picture of the cut up Jesus freaks me out. When I was little, I always hated the crucifixes with the little Jesus on them. For some reason it disturbed me. Still kinda does...
Other than that, neat pictures! Very cool :) Looks like you had fun.
I can't believe this is all right around us! how fun!
Absolutely love all of this - I swear, you find the best places in this world to visit. (Wait, I shouldn't really "swear" in this post, should I?) Beautiful photos - and love the candle (and so cool that the monks make them.) Great post, my friend.
Awesome pics! I didn't even know this existed in Alabama ;-) Looks like you had a wonderful time.
