The fact that it falls on a Saturday this year, just marks the perfect day for a little tomfoolery!
I happen to be of Irish decent, or so the family says. Granted, I have never set foot on the shores of Ireland, however, it doesn't take long for someone to take one look at me and ask, "Do you have Irish in your family?"
Something like this happened just this past Wednesday. I am sitting in the chiropractor's office and the doctor asks me this very question. I smiled and told him yes. He then asked, "By any chance black Irish?" The answer to that- Yep. (If you see someone with dark hair, super light blue eyes, and very fair skin - 9 times out of 10, the answer is yes.)
Putting aside my family tree, I discovered some super cool ideas for St. Patrick's Day and I wanted to share them with you here. But before I get started, I wondered how many of you even know what St. Patrick's day is? It's more than just green beer and sequined shamrocks - Lá Fhéile Pádraig (in Irish - translated, the Festival of Patrick,) commemorates Saint Patrick (c. AD 387–461), the most commonly recognised of the patron saints of Ireland, and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. It is observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion (especially the Church of Ireland), the Eastern Orthodox Church and Lutheran Church. Saint Patrick's Day was made an official feast day in the early seventeenth century, and has gradually become a celebration of Irish culture in general.
As a Catholic, I have studied the life of Patrick and the way he brought the message of Christianity to the pagans. He was an amazing historical figure as well as religious figure. He used the shamrock, with it's three leaves, to explain the Holy Trinity. How each petal represented the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit - and all of connected by one stem - the mystery of faith (three persons in one.)
Although St. Patrick's day is not a legal holiday, we celebrate it in America as a way to honor our Irish Heritage and Irish/American Culture. Even if you are not Catholic or Irish, every one can enjoy celebrating the life of the wonderful Catholic Saint. I found a few fabulous ideas for you!
