THIS IS THE HUMBLE ABODE

After my previous two posts, I actually received two emails (from old old friends) asking what my home looks like NOW.

I think some people got confused and thought maybe the pics I posted in the other posts could have some from my actual home.

NO.

This is my SUPER humble abode. 1 bed 1 bath in Bham.

Let's take a tour! This pic is of my egyptian wall (since I married to the egyptian.) The painting was done by my mother and is of Alexandria, Egypt (the egyptian's home city.) Then you see a few authentic pieces from Egypt to the left of the painting.

This painting is the first thing I see when I wake up in the morning. My mother painted this two years ago. I am obessed with the Greek Isles. So - she painted a post card I have.

This is the original view to my sunroom. However, the egyptian wanted to "redecorate" and took my beautiful middle eastern candle lanterns down. lol I loved it.

This was my great grandmother's crucifix. It now hangs over my bed. The rosary was blessed by Pope John Paul II

My sunroom/desk to left is my mini-office.

My simply utility room. I WISH I had some bright red appliances. LOL

This is what I drive now - my VW Bettle!

Messy - sorry - but my leather couch, and lots of blankets always. (Just keeping it real!) lol

My dining room. The only difference now is the table is turned horizontal - it definitely opens the room up.

My sunroom - pre-egyptian. This is my day bed - the egyptian decided he wanted different colors. So it has since changed.

This is the bed now. Guest stars: My sister and my niece. LOL They used the bed when they stayed with us.

This is what my mantle looks like now - sans the stockings. I am not a fan of the books on the mantle - but the egyptian insists. This is a wood burning fireplace - marble.

This is what the fireplace looked like before I got married. I am more for a "simple" look.

My bedroom. You see how I do love the white beds!

The other side of my room

Where I am sitting right now! (but old pic.)

The bathroom.

My super large garden tub.

Hall Way

One side of the kitchen. Older pic. Now all of my small appliances are red.

Other side of the galley kitchen. Yes, I HATE the wall paper, but I am an renter. *sigh*

(Recipe books on top)

That's it.. my humble little abode.

Redecorate Part 2

I wanted to finish up my "wishlist" for interior items. This is "part 2" ~ Please scroll to the previous blog entry to know what is going on here!

Here is another good example of a "shabby
chic" bedroom. I love it's casual elegance.

This bed is simply divine...

A great combination of color and casual beauty in a sunroom. I love the cobalt blues.

This room may be a little over the top - but there is something I like about it.

Going back to the Moroccan inspired items.

Would this not make a wonderful guest bedroom?

Great for a living room.

For my niece!

Today I want to re-decorate.

I would love to redecorate my home. Actually I would like to settle into a home of my own and create the space I desire! I have definitely began acquiring the pieces I need to make my "space" serene and "my own." Here are some pictures (below) that show you what my taste and vision is!

I LOVE this kitchen. It is clean, "cool" and very "airy." I have always believed a kitchen needs lots of sunshine. I love the little pop of color from the plant. Of course, a proper island is important!! I am also loving the exposed shelves on the wall. However, I am a fan of the glass cabinets (not sure what they are called, but the ones with the paned glass for doors.
This kitchen makes me feel like I am at the beach.

I would KILL to have this "den." For one, I LOVE white. Second - that light blue is soooo calming
. I am also a big fan of the fluffy couches. I could totally see me curling up with a good book and drinking coffee. (Careful not to spill!!)
Definitely has a "beachy vibe."

Check out this bedroom. I am a sucker for Victorian "inspired" bedrooms - and this room screams just that!
I love the "princess" bed and the lighting fixtures are nice. Again ~ has a clean, "airy" feel. Elegant, yet not over the top. (Check out that fabulous mantle!)

This has got the be the most fantastic Moroccan inspired bathroom I have ever seen in my life. That shower alone is a show piece.
I LOVE the purple. (Note - I own a LOT of middle eastern pieces.)
Just a super cool idea.

Going more for the North African/Islamic Middle Eastern inspired look ~
However, this is a match made in heaven for me. Using the light colors, but the feel is completely middle eastern.

I love love love sun rooms. (I have one now.) I think this sun room is a bit shabby chic and adorable. This is definitely how I would decorate a larger one.

I have always wanted a Japanese garden.

Would this not make a wonderful guest room? It is fresh, open, airy - and has an excellent beach vibe.

Finally - this is more of what I can pull off now. I have the lamps... I have the big garden tub... ahhh.

This is just a tiny taste of what I like. (I think I reached my limit on pics I can upload. LOL) Thanks for indulging me!!

Let's Get Metaphysical!

I am a sucker for a great metaphysical shop. Seriously! When I travel, I always search them out - and proceed to spend a majority of my "souvenir" funds on books about mediation, healing, or aromatherapy oils, or even random scented candles and funky jewelry.

This coming from a fairly strong catholic.

But just how far away is the "metaphysical" from what my belief system holds?
Aren't there proven health benefits to some of the "therapies" ?

I decided to tackle this topic today. (I am actually quite excited about this one!!) Just so you know, I have been studying the "metaphysical" since I was 10 years old. It started with my mother, and her zany spell books. I know you might be wondering what in the world am I talking about? But I suppose my mother has always dabbled in such things. She reads "cards", has an acute sensitivity to the paranormal. You can laugh or scoff - it is her reality and I will leave it at that. Needless to say, as a child - I was intrigued. I thought it was a very different way of viewing the "world." I at least understood that.

Then as a teenager, I was able to read many books on the subject. I bought myself an excellent book at 16 - Shakti Gawain's Creative Visualization. I am going to put this out there - and if you know me, I am the most straight forward, tsk tsker you will ever meet. However, there is definitely SOMETHING to this technique.

This book, which helped launch a movement, has been successfully used in the fields of health, education, business, sports, and creative arts for many years. Gawain explains how to use mental imagery and affirmations to produce positive changes in one’s life. The book contains meditations and exercises that are aimed at helping the practitioner channel energies in good directions, strengthen self-esteem, improve overall health, and experience deep relaxation.

In a nut shell - you think about it, you visualize the entire scenario - do this alot - and basically it will happen. People - it works. Of course, I put my "christian" spin on it ~ it's like a prayer/wish/blessing you hope to achieve. God knows.. God provides.

That is just one example of what I experienced at a young age.

On my 16th birthday - my mother arranged for me to have my first massage. I was hooked after that! There are a lot of really strong research backing the use of massage. For someone, like me - with high anxiety and high blood pressure - it works as a perfect therapy. According to the Mayo Clinic, massage when combined with traditional medical treatments is used - it will definitely reduce stress and promote healing in people with certain health conditions.

During a massage, a therapist manipulates your body's soft tissues - your muscles, skin and tendons - using his or her fingertips, hands and fists. Massage can be performed by several types of health care professionals - such as a massage therapist, physical therapist or occupational therapist. (I believe this is the most main stream form of using the "metaphysical/alternative therapies.)

Massage is a great complementary and alternative treatment. Almost everyone feels better after a massage. The treatment has been shown to help relieve pain and soreness and reduce anxiety. There are different types of massage. If you find one that works for you, you ma be surprised at how quickly it can become a regular part of your weekly routine! For me - a therapeutic massage is my favorite. It usually lasts about 90 minutes and leaves me feeling like a sack of jello for hours afterwards.

Another popular "alternative" therapy would be acupuncture. I have to admit - I have not tried this yet, but I really want to. I definitely believe you should find a proper therapist, and I do not know who is safe where I live. Again, I consulted the Mayo Clinic's Complementary and integrated Medicine Program research and they do recommend acupuncture. They have used this therapy at the Mayo Clinic since the 1970s in a variety of treatment settings. They also keep a licensed acupuncturist on staff. They believe when performed properly by a trained practitioner, acupuncture has proved to be an effective therapy. Apparently it is excellent with Fibromyalgia, Nausea & Vomiting, Osteoarthritis, Pain Management and Smoking Cessation.

A typical session involves a series of weekly or biweekly treatments in an outpatient setting. It's common to have up to 12 treatments in total. what will happen is you will sit and have a consultation, an exam and assessment, insertion of needles and a discussion of self-care tips. A session typically lasts 30 - 60 minutes.

According to the National Institutes of Health, researchers are studying at least three possible explanations for how acupuncture works:

1. Opiod Release 2. Spinal Cord Stimulation

3. Blood Flow Changes.

Another form of therapy which is a little more controversial is Reiki. I happen to personally know two Reiki practitioners. From my understanding, it is similar to Healing Touch therapies.

Reiki is made up of two Japanese words - rei, which means universal spirit, and ki which means life force energy. As with other energy therapies, practitioners of reiki belief that disturbances in the body's energy systems can cause illness, and that by improving the flow and balance of energy, disease can be treated and health maintained.

In Reiki, the practitioner delivers therapy through his or her hands with the goal of raising the amount of ki in and around the recipient.

During a session, the fully clothed recipient either sits or lies down. The practitioner's hands are placed either on or a few inches above the person's body. There are between 12 and 15 different reiki hand positions. Each position is held until the practitioner feels that the flow of energy has slowed or stopped, usually between two to 5 minutes. In addition, reiki may be performed long-distance. Hmmm..

I could see the relaxation benefits - but not so sure if I see the actual health benefits.

Another one of my super favorite is aromatherapy! (note the punctuation.) This is one therapy I came SUPER close to trying to get a certification in practising. So YES - I do dabble a bit here.

Aromatherapy is the science of using oils from various plants to treat illness and promote health. The oils are often vaporized and inhaled or used as massage oils. It's believed that compounds in the oils activate certain parts of your brain, releasing difference brain chemicals that may have a relaxing effect.

One of the many things I have tried is making soaps and bath salts infused with oils. I do take hot baths with certain oils also. It is sooo simple to do and probably the easiest and most cost effective way to "calm your spirit."

Here is a quick list of oils you can purchase and what you can use them for:

Please visit this site - ttp://www.aromatherapy.com/essentialoils.html

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask in the comment section.

Another fun one that I have been practicing for at least 15 years is meditation. Ahhh.. sweet meditation. Now, don't shy away from this. If you pray -in all honesty - that is a form of mediation. Heck, even the catholic church has several prayers we "meditate" on. The term meditation refers to a group of techniques, many of which have their roots in Eastern religious or spiritual traditions. Today, many people use meditation for health and wellness purposes.

In meditation, a person focuses attention on his or her breathing, or on repeating a word, phrase or sounds in order to suspend the stream of thoughts that normally occupies the conscious mind. Meditation is believed to lead to a state of physical relaxation, mental calmness, alertness and psychological balance.

Meditation can be practiced on its own or as a part of another mind-body therapy, such as yoga or tai chi. Like other mind-body therapies, once you learn how to meditate, you can do it on your own.

Research has found it works wonders for people suffering with anxiety and stress, asthma, fibromyalgia, and high blood pressure.

There are several different kinds:
Analytical meditation
Breath meditation
Mindfulness meditation
Transcendental meditation
Visualization and Walking meditation.

There are a few other items you might want to familiarize yourself with:
Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Naturopathy and Traditional Chinese Medicine.
(I am a fan of homeopathy and naturopathy.. the other two.. not in my comfort zone.)

Just to break it down in the simplest terms:
Ayurveda - means "science of life." It originated in India more than 5,000 years ago and is thought to be the world's oldest system of natural medicine. The basic theory is that all things in the universe are joined together and that all forms of life consist of combinations of three energy elements: wind, fire, water. When these elements are balanced, a person is healthy.

Homeopathy - is a form of health care developed in Germany, which has been practised in the states since the early 19th century. The key premise of homeopathic medicine is that every person has a form of energy called a vital force, or self healing response. When this force is disrupted or out of balance, illness results. (Heck - when you are stressed, you get sick.. right???)
Homeopathy aims to stimulate the body's healing response. Treatment generally involves giving small doses of substances called remedies.

Naturopathy - is a form of health care based on the belief that the body has an innate healing power that can establish, maintain and restore health when it's in a healthy environment. (Who can argue with that?) This form of medicine relies on natural remedies, such as sunlight, air and water, along with "natural" supplements to promote health and well-being.

Traditional Chinese Medicine - is a system of medicine rooted in ancient Chinese philosophy (Taoism).
It is based on the belief that the body is a delicate balance of two opposing forces: yin & yang. Yin represents the cold, slow or passive principle of life, while yang represents the hot, excited, active one. Health is achieved by maintaining an appropriate balance of the two. In Chinese Medicine treatments may include: Acupuncture, moxibustion or cupping; Chinese herbs; massage and manipulation and Qi gong.

Finally, I cannot finish this out without bringing up religion. This can range from the BIG FIVE: Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hindu, Buddhism. Then the "old religions" of paganism, etc.

Each are in their own way a form of the "metaphysical." Metaphysics generally deals with notions, concepts, hypotheses, etc. related to the non-material world, i.e., the sphere of mental events, or the astral world.

So whether you wear a talisman for protection, or clip your guardian angel to the visor in your car.. or perhaps you pray the rosary, or take baths in oils. Maybe you light candles when someone dies as a memory, or believe in the healing use of prayer - it's all metaphysical.

It makes me happy. What are you favorite forms of the metaphysical??

I am the wanderer.. I keep.. wandering..

I am very excited about my upcoming work trip. I know that those two words - work + trip do not normally invoke feelings of euphoria, but this time
feels different.

I leave Monday morning for Mobile/Pensacola. I will actually be staying in Mobile ~ for now, an undisclosed location - just in case some psycho stalker is reading this. *giggle*

I was doing a little historical research on the city of Mobile, and it has a fascinating past. This makes the trip all the more interesting. (Yes, I am a DORK.)

I hope to not only get a handle on my media sponsors and work related items, but I hope I get to "taste" what Mobile has to offer.

Luckily for me, I am staying in the more historical side of town. This will make the evening "fitness" walk more pleasurable.

One Tuesday of next week I get to spend the day in Pensacola, Florida. AGAIN - super excited. I have only driven through Pen once, but I remember thinking to myself.. hmmm.. I like this little town. Such a shame these beautiful little seaside cities do not have more to offer work wise. My hope is to one day, finally find my perfect little job by the sea. Obviously, it would be nice to do what I am doing now ~ but transfer to the sea. However, where I work (and for most of us wanting to be successful) - all of this requires living in the metropolitan areas. For my organization, that only leaves Miami, Jax and Tampa. None of which excite me in the least. Don't get me wrong, I think Miami is HOT ~ both figuratively and literally. But I do not speak spanish and I think I would have to make a lot of money to be comfortable there. Tampa.. hmmm.. would prefer not. Then Jax.. too spread out (like Bham.)

Now I don't ever want to choke on my words.. because as soon as I say that, tomorrow I could be saying.. Hey - I moving to... (fill in the blank with said city.)

I suppose this is all I really wanted to say. I am excited about my little excursion and I am hoping for excellent weather! Until then.. I have a ball to attend.. EEK!

Shocker Shoes

** Disclaimer ~ I do not own one single pair.

I am concerned and intrigued. It involves a shoe. Not just any shoe - a STRIPPER shoe.

Yes, stripper shoes (high heeled platform shoes) are gaining popularity again. Women enjoy looking "saucy" and stripper shoes can help their outfit do just that.

The spike in popularity could be due to the recent use in fashion shows. However, one thing for sure is more women are definitely using them in their wardrobes.

The term stripper shoe obviously comes from the fact that they have been most popular with exotic dancers and adult entertainers. Stripper shoes are just very tall platform shoes that can sometimes reach 8 inches tall. These high heels elongate the leg and make the appearance of the women taller and leaner. Platform shoes used to be popular in the 70’s before just being categorized as stripper shoes. In addition, with the recent trends it seems that they are making a comeback.

Upon closer inspection - there are a WIDE variety of styles. I have to admit - it seems like a bit of an art form.

I give HUGE props to the people who are actually able to pull this look off. LOL Or even WALK.. much less dance.

Seriously??

However - these shoes - the one to the left, are pretty hot. I would probably kill myself wearing them, but it is fun to this it is possible. *giggle.*

A friend of mine and I were discussing shoes today - and that is how this whole blog post came up.

I mentioned that I was feeling "sassy" in my silver shoes. Which in turn, she told me that when she feels sassy, she puts on her clear heels that light up when she walks.

I paused.. and said.. umm.. er.. "You mean.. stripper shoes?" She laughed and said - NO!

I asked her when in the world would you wear these, she informed me - on New Years, Halloween and this one time she was in a bikini contest at a night club.

**scratching of throat.**

Yes, I raised an eyebrow. LOL

So what is the big deal??? I have have a beautiful pair of Nine West black leather sling backs that are about three inches. So what makes me so different???

Welll... I don't think I should answer that one.

SOoo - how DOES a person walk in such a shoe?

Finally - the tips needed to pull this off:

There you have it - Stripper Shoes For You! LOL

Abre tu Corazon

This Saturday, the American Heart Association will host the 23rd Annual Heart Ball. The theme: Abre tu Corazon - Open Your Heart. A total spanish theme, complete with flamenco dancers (yay!) and trips to Madrid for auction.

This year we hope to raise over $1 million dollars. (Which we normally do!) With over 1,000 guests, it is not hard to reach this goal.

The Heart Ball is presented by the Heart Guild of Birmingham. This group is led by an amazing group of women that have single handily turned this event into "the" event of the season. Anyone who is "anyone" will be at the Ball. It is very exclusive - invitation only.

Now 1,000 guests may sounds like a lot to some of my friends back home, but remember - Birmingham has almost 2 million residents in the metro area, so it is expected.

This year's ball will honor the President of the University of Alabama at Birmingham - Dr. Carol Garrison. By honoring Dr. Garrison, I believe we do a great job of recognizing the amazing efforts through education and research at the university hospital. One of the highlights of the program will be a special appeal where we ask for more donations for the Natalie Henry Fund. This fund was established in 2007 at the Heart Ball in memory of a young girl from Birmingham born with congenital heart defect who lost her life waiting for a heart transplant. Congenital heart defect continues to be #1 birth defect in the country. Phase 1 Goal (met!!) will provide families with high rish newborns an infant cpr anytime kit and training at the hospital before taking their baby home. Those kits are placed in hospitals throughout the city.

Phase 2 Goal (launching at the 2010 Heart Ball) will work to save and improve young lives through state-of-the-art cardiovascular care, education and research in a joint partnership between AHA and Children’s Hospital of Birmingham . The best news of all - all proceeds raised will remain in Birmingham!!

Another way we are raising money is through our amazing live and silent auction. I thought I would highlight some of the super cool items up for auction. These packages SCREAM fabulous!

Je veux être gracieux.

Ain't it the truth? Je veux être gracieux. I really, really do.

(For those without the years of french under their belt - I simply want to be graceful.)

Grace is one thing I have always admired. I think that is why as a young child I was mesmerized by the dancers at the Ballet. I was so envious, that I insisted my mother enroll me in ballet classes at a young age.

Now, I could not confirm whether or not I was ever graceful. I did dance for many, many years. However, I do not know whether I actually exuded "grace" in my everyday life.

To the left is a picture of Cate Blanchette. I saw an interview with her on David Letterman. This woman was very "slinky." Reminded me of a cat. She slid out onto the stage, her movements were slow and calculated. She was, in a word, graceful.

Cate is definitely someone I would love to emulate.

Another very "poised" person (to me) is - Gwyneth Paltrow.

Gwyneth is another one who exudes confidence, mystery and grace. Below is another interview that shows - in my opinion, a lovely personality!

I would then say - another "graceful" woman would be - Natalie Portman.

Natalie is not only graceful, and an excellent actor - she is absolutely beautiful.

I have to note that each of these women are equally excellent actors (again in my opinion!)

Turns out - all of these women are not only talented, they are highly intelligent and educated. THAT is awesome.

I think I will now list other people I believe exude grace.

Meryl Streep

Kate Winslet

Scarlett Johannson

Nicole Kidman

Kiera Knightley

There you have - Grace.. Beauty.. Intelligence.. Talent.

These are qualities I admire in other women.

Unoriginal in Quotations

I do! I love movies and I watch at least one a day - and for whatever reason, I memorize lines from movies.

Movie watching comes in 4 forms for me:

1. I come home after a long day at work, throw on my yoga pants and super-soft cotton tee shirt, fluffy socks... grab either a cup of coffee, glass of water, or that rare cup of diet coke and then the cinematic treasures begin.
2. The egyptian and I drive to Vestavia Hills and meet Ma'amoon, another fabulous egyptian who just so happens to manage the movie theater. In turn, free movies.
3. $1 is one of my favorite places to go. It is less than 2 miles from the home, and there is something about the broken chairs, sticky floor, and crummy sound system that just keeps me coming back for more.
4. Finally - the drive-in movie theater off of Hwy 280. Fun experience to grab a lawn chair, purchase one of their $1 cappucinos and enjoy a random showing.

Back to movie quotes.
What are your favorites?

I have a few....

I have to start with the Godfather:
~[delivering his rehearsed speech] Luca Brasi: Don Corleone, I am honored and grateful that you have invited me to your daughter... 's wedding... on the day of your daughter's wedding. And I hope their first child be a masculine child. I pledge my ever-ending loyalty.
~Michael: My father is no different than any powerful man, any man with power, like a president or senator. Kay Adams: Do you know how naive you sound, Michael? Presidents and senators don't have men killed. Michael: Oh. Who's being naive, Kay?

~Another favorite of mine is Under The Tuscan Sun:
Marcello: Francesca. Frances: Yes? Marcello: I am going to make love all over you! Frances: Okay.

~Patti: Can you star-69 Italy?

~Frances: Ladybugs, Katherine. Lots and lots of ladybugs.
~Frances: [in voiceover] Every day I watch for the old man with the flowers, and I wonder, was he born here? Did he love someone here? Did he lose someone here? He doesn't seem as curious about me, but that's all right. These days I'm something of a loner myself.

~Frances: Do you know the most surprising thing about divorce? It doesn't actually kill you. Like a bullet to the heart or a head-on car wreck. It should. When someone you've promised to cherish till death do you part says "I never loved you," it should kill you instantly. You shouldn't have to wake up day after day after that, trying to understand how in the world you didn't know. The light just never went on, you know. I must have known, of course, but I was too scared to see the truth. Then fear just makes you so stupid. Martini: No, it's not stupid, Signora Mayes. L'amore e cieco. Frances: Oh, love is blind. Yeah, we have that saying too. Martini: Everybody has that saying because it's true everywhere.
~Martini: Signora. Please stop being so sad. If you continue like this, I will be forced to make love to you. And I've never been unfaithful to my wife.
~Frances: What are four walls, anyway? They are what they contain. The house protects the dreamer. Unthinkably good things can happen, even late in the game. It's such a surprise.

Another movie: French Kiss:

~Kate: Spasm! Spasm! Oh, God, here it comes... lactose intolerance!

~Kate: Do you speak English? Concierge: Of course, Madam. This is the Georges V, not some backpacker's hovel.

~
Kate: Did you know that there are four hundred and fifty-two official government cheeses in this country? Don't you think that's incredible? To come up with four hundred and fifty-two ways of classifying what is basically a bacterial process? Luc: You would prefer one cheese? One cheeseburger to put it on and one restaurant to eat it in? Kate: I'm saying I *like* the cheese. God!
~Kate: A healthy person is someone who expresses what they're feeling inside. Express, not repress. Luc: In that case, you must be one of the healthiest people in the world.

~
Kate: Fester, fester, fester. Rot, rot, rot.

~Kate: No matter what I might seem like tonight, it's still the same old me from yesterday you wind up with tomorrow.

~Kate: [to Luc] You'll become one of those hunchbacked, lonely old men, sitting in the corner of a crowded cafe, mumbling to yourself, "My ass is twitching. You people make my ass twitch."

~Kate: You know, all men are bastards. Luc: Well, not all. I mean, some are just trying to help. Kate: You know, I never thought I'd be
~Kate: I never thought I would bethe kind of woman to say this, but it's true. All men are bastards. Luc: The guy who was talking to you, he was... Kate: A bastard. A Eurotrash-in-Armani kind of bastard. Luc: He was wearing a black suit? With a yellow shirt? Kate: Yeah. [Luc groans, then pulls Kate up from the sofa] Kate: You know him? Luc: Come on. Kate: Of course you know him. All you bastards know each other. [Luc pulls Kate toward the hotel exit] Kate: [to the conierge] Bastard!

That's just a few.. I could go on and on.. perhaps I will in a later post. I picked three movies that I could watch over and over.. and those are just a few of my favorite lines.
